Travel Tales is an ongoing series of works on paper which capture something of the places I visit and the journeys I make, as well as developments in the directions of my work. I‘m interested in the cohesion of seemingly natural landscape (normally farmed, maintained and cordoned) alongside evidence of human interference. Not so much a bad thing, but more of a negotiation between the two.
Travel Notes begin with mark making as I grasp at elements from films of the passing landscape. These are recorded of the view from plane, train and car windows (not while driving of course!). I then create arbitrary systems of logic and mapping to connect and contain the image. Similarly and in contrast, the Location works are stationary images, normally derived from close up studies of minute details in the surrounding areas such as flora, forna, shoe prints, tyre treads and the exploration of holding patterns.
